The Mayapuris have crash-landed into the kirtan/chant genre, quickly becoming the most talked about group in this growing culture of exotic world music. Their debut album Mridanga soars with fiery vocals, earth shaking rhythms and enchanting musical flavor.
The Mayapuris, an intense beam of musical light which seems to mystically fuse the coolness of moonlight with the brilliant mid-day sunshine of yogic ardor, make a magical avatar-like plunge - sacred descent - through the gloomy ozone layer that attempts to choke Houston into meaningless submission, on Friday evening, July 16 at 7:30 at Planet Funk.
According to Krishna Kishor, devotional kirtan singer and instrumentalist for the traveling ensemble of energetic, youthful bhakti-yogis, "Kirtan, the call-and-response of sacred mantras, brings everyone together on the spiritual plane. It can send tears of joy and inspire us to dance and twirl skyward, like giddy peacocks during a monsoon thunderstorm." Kish, as his friends call him, spent time in Mayapur India in an ashram as a child, and he is adept at mrdunga drum, harmonium, and flute, as well as other Indian instruments. His remarkable energy and enthusiasm during kirtan awakens the audience's soul to experience the actual essence of kirtan's love.
